| | "Wash Away"--Joe Purdy | ] | My grandmother died on Sunday morning. It was not entirely unexpected, but it still sucks. My mom's parents lived in Florida until about 2000, when my mom and her brothers convinced them to move up to LR into a retirement community; the house they had in Eustis, FL, was a two story and they were having some problems. After they moved up here, both of them had recurring health issues, including several strokes each. During the last few years, she had developed advanced alzheimer's and quickly went into dementia. Now, we all have conflicting emotions: we're happy that she's not in pain anymore, but we are sad to lose her and sad for my grandfather. He seems to be taking it okay, he has the same kind of conflict going on. And since she was worse off than he was, she has been in her own room in the nursing home while he was staying in an apartment on premesis. It's all kinda scary really. This is definitely not the first loss the family has dealt with, but it is the first time I've put much thought into this situtation. I spent most of the day yesterday in the new apartment unpacking and thinking. I don't think I've found an answer to what I'm thinking, or even a question.
There is mixed good in this as well: my brother is coming home early to try and make it for the service. It's Thursday afternoon, and he doesn't know if he will be in by then, but he should be back by this weekend. My family originally decided not to let him know if something happened; he was in the last month of his tour, and we didn't think he could come home. But he must have known something was going to happen cuz he told my folks to call the Red Cross if something does. We did, and he's on the way back. The unit was on it's way to Kuwait for a few weeks of downtime before going home, and they let him go. He still has to go to Ft. Sill in late October to demobilize with the rest of the unit, but that's just two weeks and then he's back.
I don't know, I just don't know.
Edit: thanks to all. And we found out that Nate will be in town tomorrow at 4. It's the end of this tour, and possibly his military career, but that's not for certain yet. |

Just a little one right now, more to come.
I never had to deal with the various offices at my university, as they shifted everything to online a few years ago. But now that my status has changed, I have been to many offices I don't normally go. And it has been pure hell. Seriously. It's about to drive me batty.
I've been laying low all weekend, as I had a few 9-hour straight days at the end of the week. There were some big projects involved, so it's not a big deal yet, but I did think "Shit, and classes haven't even started yet." Plus, the time I was exhausted and ready and happy to be heading home was the time the classes would be starting.
But they do start this week, and I am looking forward to it. But I just need to get the other administrative-related crap out of the way and then I can enjoy the experience more, not to mention find a place to live (like semi-permanently).
Did a little movie night with the rents last evening. Saw "Fun with Dick and Jane" and "The Man Who Knew Too Little." Both very good and rather funny.
Also, I will never underestimate the healing power of They Might Be Giants. And Futurama. |

Okay, the job is going well so far. We have been planning for the fall high school symposium, and I have been compiling a list of high schools to contact. We just confirmed our room reservations in October, so now we will begin sending notice to everybody.
I cannot register for class yet, as there was an unidentified finaid flag on my account. Went there this morning, and I just needed to sign a piece of paper confirming I am re-attending the school; because all the other paperwork processed saying I would be attending was not enough. Seriously, I have signed documents for, like, seven offices.
Now, I am planning one last fun thing before school starts. The national SPJ conference is this weekend in Chicago, and I, and possibly one other student, will be attending. Tho I think I will be going solo. It's Thursday-Sunday, and if I can find cheap enough places to stay, it's on.
Then classes start. I was mistaken on one of my classes (just which one I was taking); I have Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday night classes. Not too bad. But I though I had Tuesday, W, Th classes, so my four-day weekend went away. Oh well, I'll be working almost every day anyway.
Today, I will also go talk to the student housing people and see if I can get in one of the new apartments. There are a few variables to be sorted out, but the price is right, so I will see. If that don't work out, I may stay at Rob's for a week or two while trying to find an apartment. On top of school.
Update: Chicago ain't gonna happen. It's just too much cash for the student groups, and too much stress for me right now. S'all right, there's plenty of conferences and conventions this term. |

Nate's due to land in, like, an hour. I'm pretty psyched, tho I don't know what he'll want to do. Maybe he will sleep, and I can take a nap.
Tho I don't have anything official going on right now, I seem to be busy beyond all reason. There have been many late nights this week.
The other night, I had this bizarre dream about auctioning my pants off in a church auction, then going home and realizing walking out in public with nothing covering my neither-regions was bad, so I made an epic, half-naked trek through a massive subway system to get my pants back.
Last night was a night of intoxication and reliving of memories, regrets and triumphs.
This week will be school and finding a place to live. The first two apartments I looked at were shitholes.
But I can stay here for a while longer, and since I am giving Nate his old room back, I am camped out in the Media Room: Big TV and Computer for me! YAY! |

| | movie: MST3K--Angel's Revenge | ] | Head's getting better, thankfully. Painful congestion sucks.
Nate called yesterday and he's in town Monday or Tuesday. So this weekend I will see everyone, as the next week won't be guaranteed. Then we (family) might go out of town the next week. Really we're all playing this by ear, cuz the military does what it wants with the troops when it wants. I would not be surprised to get a call from him Sunday saying "I'm at the airport. Pick me up, bitch."
Their's interesting development going on in the city. Stagnant property is being renovated or rebuilt, and businesses are being attracted to the city. It's bizarre; for the past 15 years, the city planners have just been pushing out further and further west, but now they are utilizing good land that's gone undeveloped, or has not been used well. Hopefully it will work as good as the Rivermarket project and bring in some bucks.
School is coming, and then the fun truly begins. |

| | movie: Series 7 Contenders | ] | I don't know how long this post will be. I am feeling a bit fuzzy in the head. I have a sinus infection and am also taking meds that make me sleepy and weirdish. Happened as soon as I got on the plane yesterday...
So, I am back in the LR. I have not posted often...or, at all this summer as it evolved into "Zach's Grand Vacation," which I kind of needed (even in Europe, I had class and stuff). But it was a long summer of reading and walking, talking and hanging out, enjoying the company of my wonderful lady Emily, and just being alive and poor in Boston. Can't ask for too much more, 'cept a pony.
I do want to thank everyone for being who they are, which is great people, and showing me a fantastic time while I was in MA. It was wonderful and I hope to see you all again soon. Until then, read on, read on.
I have good and bad feelings about being back right now. It is neat to see my family again, and my dog went nuts when she saw me. And my brother will be in for R&R on August 7 or 8, which will be very nice. It's been nearly a year since we've seen him.
I am looking forward to hanging out with my AR friends too, tho some are out of town. I keep wondering what kind of hell could be unleashed if everyone from AR met everyone from MA...
And there is the work/school to look forward to. Getting paid again will be nice.
But it does suck. I keep thinking I am on a business trip. I even got a bit of culture shock last night and had to go see my friends in my old house.
But there are things to do; I have to get school stuff straightened out, find a place to live.
Busy Busy Busy.
Yeah, this summer was fucking awesome. Like a hot dog. |

| | DangerDoom | ] | So, there has been some good and bad going on since last post, all of it busy and crazy.
The bad, so I can get it over with: -I still have a whole bunch of stuff to do before the move. Renting a truck one way to boston will be about $700, not including gas. This means I am renting a van or something and cramming all the stuff I can and still fit me and E. This also means I have to get rid of some furniture. My parents are gonna take some, as Nate will need it when he gets back and moves into a place somewhere. -There is a bunch of work I have to do for class: a test, a big story, a project and three finals. -My apartment is having some flooding issues, which are getting worse. It first happened a few weeks ago. I live in a basement apartment, and I don't think the wall's seals are very good. When it rains heavily, I get water in the kitchen and out of the closet. Joel, Sebastian and I did some improptu caulking when it happened the second time on Saturday, and the landlord was over with a guy to have it looked at (after several weeks, thanks a lot) but it is supposed to rain every day this week. I am afeared.
But there is much good: -I got some awards! I got the UALR SPJ outstanding senior award, which is 100 bones. And I got two a the Arkansas College Media Association thing, Honorable mention in Meeting and Speech coverage and third place in Review Writing. Which means technically, I am an award-winning writer. -I am winning other shit too. I got a DVD player at the SGA's big event, which I will sell, and today I got a $50 barnes gift card at Spring Day, both from random draws. So I am gonna get a book and maybe a CD. -I got my tax refund in too. -I picked up a copy of Advent Children, and hot damn that movie is pretty. I have watched it five times in six days. Anybody who played FF7 should check it out. -Emily will be down on the 11th, which will be cool cuz we will be heading for Boston not long after. -We finished the regular kickball season (which could be in bad I guess) and we have a chance at getting into the finals, as it is based on votes rather than record. The last double-header was marked by getting chased by bees (many), getting mowed over by a woman who could truck (I was on my SHOULDERS with my legs in the air, and she collided with my area) and using the electric guitar to wage unsuccessful psychological warfare on the other team.
If my stuff stays dry, if I can finish my work, if I can get my stuff packed, if I can get enough bank for the move, and if I can get some fucking sleep, then everything will be great. |
